People from around the world have travelled to Nepal for various reasons - to see the majestic Himalayas with their own eyes, experience the diverse and vibrant culture, to walk through the ancient temples and stupa’s or maybe just to be here with spiritual and friendly people of the mountains. A visit to this tiny nation in the Himalayas has so much to offer that your first visit is definitely, never going to be the last.
The 7.8 magnitude earthquake on April the 25th that rocked Nepal has left over 8000 people dead, over 20,000 people injured and more than half a million people homeless in remote villages. As the people suffer, the Nepalese people have come together to aid their suffering fellow citizens and have truly revealed their strength and self-reliance, their equanimity, friendliness and spirituality even in such difficult times. With the recent natural disaster of earthquake that had affected almost everyone, Shrijanshil Nepal Nepal has taken up the responsibility of supporting Laprak village, a once beautiful Gurung village of 611 households and 3500 people, only 6 hours walk from Barpak, the epicenter. The entire village of Laprak has been flattened to the ground, including the local school that provided education to over 600 children, and the local health post.
As the land of the village has been deemed vulnerable to possible landslides due to the earthquake, the people have been forced to seek refuge in higher grounds in areas up to 2700 meters. Living in such difficult terrains is not easy even during normal conditions and now, they have been left without adequate shelter, without food, safe drinking water, electricity, communication and most importantly, without access to the little agricultural land in those steep hills they used to rely on. KFN in partnership with the locals of Laprak provided essential medicines for the temporary clinic, basic sanitation materials, GI sheets for temporary shelter to 150 households, solar lights for public spaces and to the students of class 10 to enable them to study in those difficult conditions for their upcoming board exams.
Shrijanshil Nepal Nepal has also initiated the project ‘Adopt a Village’ with friends from Malaysia. The project continues to support the people of Laprak and help rebuild the small village by providing them the much-needed support of construction materials and solar panels to rebuild their houses and install the panels to help provide water and electricity.
During the period of 2015 earthquake, about 89% of schools in 23 of the earthquakes’ affected districts were damaged or completely destroyed. Out of these, in 8,242 public schools, 25,134 classrooms were fully destroyed and 22,097 schools were damaged. While in the private schools, 956 classrooms were fully destroyed and 3,983 were damaged. The impact was way higher in the community schools than in the private sector. In Gorkha district alone it is reported that 90% of the schools had collapsed or had severe damage. This was the time that Shrijanshil Nepal Nepal stepped forward to support children and youths, with love and kindness, as our name suggests, in becoming independent and capable youths contributing towards the socio-economic development of the nation and the world by improving their access to formal and/or vocational education and personal development since we understand that not every child can excel academically while they might be a talent in other areas such as music, sports, etc. We find it extremely important, possibilities in life are not merely limited by the ability of a child to excel academically, though minimum levels of education need to be ensured. Our mission is to encourage children and youths to dream and guide them in realizing the unlimited possibilities of life by working hard towards their dream. In the process KFN with close coordination with the local government and the SMC of Shree Prajabasti Primary school accorded to help the school with the construction of a semi - permanent school to replace the temporary one. The plan for 8 classrooms were designed by the engineer graduated from Kathmandu University and the work was started from January 2016.
At Gorkha KFN aimed for “A Beautiful Dream”- Along with the reconstruction of Shree Prajabasti Primary School we look towards developing it as a model school where children from other communities will also enroll. The other purpose was to encompass the development of this Chepang community.
